The Hamefarin

Last week my husband an I went to see his family in Shetland and to see the Hamefarin Galley burning. It was such a fantastic week, we managed to fit a lot in. Staying with his parents in Lerwick gave us the perfect base to explore. Our day trip to the island of Yell was really good, I don't know what it is about that island but its my favourite one. Maybe its the pace of life or just the feeling that you are in the country.

We also visited the Shetland museum, had dinner in the Sumburgh hotel, watched the Puffins from the Sumburgh lighthouse and lots more.

The highlight of the week was the Galley burning on the Clickimin Loch. We walked down the loch at 10.30pm to get our spots for the show. It was a strange experience as it never really gets dark in Shetland at this time of the year. At 11pm all the guisers whom were all dressed as Vikings light their torches and marched around the loch to then throw the burning torches into the galley and we watched it burn. The night was rounded off with a fireworks display. Just magical!!
